CYP1B1 (Cytochrome P450 1B1) is an enzyme. In the public catalogues the evidence so far is association rather than a proven role. Tied to Skin cancer, Melanoma and Basal cell carcinoma.
A cytochrome P450 monooxygenase involved in the metabolism of various endogenous substrates, including fatty acids, steroid hormones and vitamins. Mechanistically, uses molecular oxygen inserting one oxygen atom into a substrate, and reducing the second into a water molecule, with two electrons provided by NADPH via cytochrome P450 reductase (NADPH--haemoprotein reductase). Exhibits catalytic activity for the formation of hydroxyestrogens from estrone (E1) and 17beta-estradiol (E2), namely 2- and 4-hydroxy E1 and E2.
Open Targets scores its association with cancer at 0.60 (direct and indirect evidence; datatypes literature 0.98, animal model 0.68, genetic association 0.74).

No product in this corpus aims at CYP1B1 yet. Inhibitors are shaped to fit the enzyme's active site so the reaction the cancer relies on stops.
First described 1994. Earliest sequence paper UniProt cites for the protein: Sutter T.R. et al, J. Biol. Chem, 1994, "Complete cDNA sequence of a human dioxin-inducible mRNA identifies a new gene subfamily of cytochrome P450 that maps to chromosome 2". Source.

Exhibits catalytic activity for the formation of hydroxyestrogens from estrone (E1) and 17beta-estradiol (E2), namely 2- and 4-hydroxy E1 and E2. Displays a predominant hydroxylase activity toward E2 at the C-4 position. Metabolises testosterone and progesterone to B or D ring hydroxylated metabolites. May act as a major enzyme for all-trans retinoic acid biosynthesis in extrahepatic tissues. Location: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Microsome membrane; Mitochondrion (UniProt). Locus 2p22.2 (HGNC).
