Co-developed the HPV vaccine technology that is eliminating cervical cancer in vaccinated populations.
Douglas R. Lowy is Principal Deputy Director of the National Cancer Institute, where he has also served as acting director. He is known for co-developing with John Schiller the virus-like particle technology underlying all licensed HPV vaccines, work recognised with the Lasker Award in 2017. His selected paper shows that the papillomavirus L1 major capsid protein self-assembles into virus-like particles that are highly immunogenic. His work on HPV biology and vaccine development is the basis for the prevention of cervical cancer and HPV-related head and neck cancer in vaccinated populations.
