Virologist whose HPV research underpinned the vaccines that are eliminating cervical cancer.
Denise Galloway is Director of the Pathogen-Associated Malignancies Integrated Research Center at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. A molecular virologist specialising in HPV and viral oncology, she characterised how HPV oncoproteins transform cells and led early serologic and vaccine work that underpinned the vaccines now reducing cervical cancer. She received the Lasker-DeBakey Award in 2017 with Douglas Lowy and John Schiller for HPV vaccine contributions. Her papers include a review of the shared and distinct pathways of human papillomavirus pathogenesis and a comparison of capsid antibody responses to HPV types 16, 18 and 6 after incident infection, with relevance to cervical and head and neck cancer prevention.
