Pancreatic cancer immunologist who developed the GVAX vaccine and led national cancer policy panels.
Elizabeth M. Jaffee is Deputy Director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and Co-Director of the Skip Viragh Center for Pancreas Cancer. She is a pancreatic cancer immunologist known for developing the GVAX pancreas vaccine and for studies of how to convert immunologically cold pancreatic tumours into ones the immune system can see. Her selected paper shows that immunotherapy converts non-immunogenic pancreatic tumours into immunogenic foci of immune regulation. A former AACR president and chair of the NCI's National Cancer Advisory Board, she continues to work on cancer vaccines and checkpoint inhibitors in pancreatic cancer.

The reference for why pancreatic microenvironment trials read as a list of failures and what the field now means by remodelling rather than removing the stroma.
Fibroblasts are part of the immune conversation, not just a physical barrier, which is why stromal and immune strategies are now designed together.
It set the frame that every later landscape paper filled in: pancreatic cancer is a disease of a few pathways broken by many different genes, so drugs must aim at pathways or their dependencies rather than one rare mutation.
