Mays Cancer Center descends from the Cancer Therapy & Research Center, NCI-designated since 1991, whose Institute for Drug Development under Daniel Von Hoff conducted early trials of gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel among other agents. UT Health San Antonio founded the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in 1977, now the world's largest breast cancer meeting, co-hosted with the AACR and Baylor's Smith Breast Center. The centre serves South Texas's predominantly Latino population, with Amelie Ramirez's Salud America! programme addressing Latino cancer disparities, and hosts the Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute. It is an MD Anderson affiliate and has strengths in myeloproliferative neoplasms and breast oncology.
