Michael Baumann is a radiation oncologist who leads Germany's national cancer research centre.
Michael Baumann is Chairman and Scientific Director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany's national cancer research centre. A radiation oncologist, his specialisms are radiation oncology, radiobiology and research leadership, with links to modern image-guided external beam and proton therapy. He has chaired the DKFZ since 2016 and previously led radiation oncology in Dresden, with research on tumour hypoxia, biomarkers and personalised radiotherapy. His papers include a Nature Reviews Cancer article on radiation oncology in the era of precision medicine, the first clinical application of a prompt gamma-based in vivo proton range verification system, and a Nature Medicine piece on caring for patients with cancer in the COVID-19 era.
