Led ProtecT, the trial that showed monitoring, surgery and radiotherapy give equally low prostate cancer death rates at 15 years.
Freddie Hamdy was chief investigator of ProtecT, the UK randomised trial of active monitoring, prostatectomy and radiotherapy for PSA-detected localised prostate cancer, whose 10- and 15-year results showed very low and similar mortality across arms and made active surveillance a mainstream choice. He also co-led the CAP screening trial. He leads urological research in Oxford.
