Surgeon who led CARMENA, the trial that showed most metastatic kidney cancer patients do not benefit from removing the kidney.
Arnaud Méjean (Paris) was principal investigator of CARMENA, which showed sunitinib alone was non-inferior to cytoreductive nephrectomy followed by sunitinib in intermediate and poor-risk metastatic renal cell carcinoma, ending routine upfront nephrectomy in the targeted therapy era. His work redefined the role of surgery in advanced kidney cancer and is being revisited in the immunotherapy era.
