A New York foundation that has funded early-career cancer scientists since 1946; its alumni include a dozen Nobel laureates.
Founded in 1946 in memory of the writer Damon Runyon, the foundation supports young scientists at the riskiest stage of their careers through Fellowship, Clinical Investigator, Physician-Scientist Training and Innovation awards, on the view that bold early bets pay off. Its alumni have gone on to lead cancer centres and to win the Nobel Prize, and its Clinical Investigator Award protects time for physician-scientists to run trials. Damon Runyon funds across all cancers and all approaches and spends every dollar donated on research, with administrative costs covered by its endowment.

When his friend Damon Runyon died of throat cancer in 1946 he asked his radio audience for a penny, a nickel, a dime or a dollar; the fund he started has invested over $490 million and backed more than 4,000 scientists.
