Insys Therapeutics was an Arizona company whose sublingual fentanyl spray for breakthrough cancer pain went through phase 3 trials; its marketing practices later led to criminal convictions and bankruptcy.
Insys Therapeutics, founded in 1990 and based in Chandler, Arizona, developed Subsys, a fentanyl sublingual spray approved for breakthrough pain in opioid-tolerant cancer patients, and a dronabinol oral solution. Its executives were convicted in 2019 over kickbacks to prescribers, and the company filed for bankruptcy the same year. Its phase 3 trials in cancer pain remain on ClinicalTrials.gov under Insys as lead sponsor. ClinicalTrials.gov also lists under Insys the earlier NeoPharm programmes it absorbed, including the interleukin-13 conjugated toxin IL13-PE38QQR (cintredekin besudotox) in malignant glioma (NCT00076986) and liposomal paclitaxel and docetaxel formulations.
Dronabinol is synthetic THC in a capsule, approved in 1985 for chemotherapy nausea and vomiting that other antiemetics have failed to control, and later for appetite loss in AIDS; it sits well behind the 5-HT3 and NK1 antagonists in today's guidelines.
