Washing the abdomen with heated chemotherapy during interval surgery extended survival by about a year.
OVHIPEC-1, trial NCT00426257 sponsored by the Netherlands Cancer Institute and reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2018, showed that washing the abdomen with heated cisplatin during interval cytoreductive surgery for stage III ovarian cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy extended survival by about a year. It randomised 245 patients to surgery with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, improved overall survival without increasing serious complications, and the benefit held at ten-year follow-up published in Lancet Oncology in 2023. OnCo links it to ovarian cancer, HIPEC and PIPAC intraperitoneal chemotherapy, the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Willemien J. van Driel and the pairing of HIPEC at interval surgery. Uptake remains uneven, and whether HIPEC also helps at primary surgery, which OVHIPEC-2 is testing, is the open question.
