Surendra Shastri is a preventive oncologist and former Head of Preventive Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, part of the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai. He ran the cluster-randomised trial of visual inspection with acetic acid screening delivered by primary health workers in Mumbai slums, which showed that this approach cuts cervical cancer deaths and informed screening policy across low-resource settings. His publications include the Mumbai randomised controlled study of VIA screening by primary health workers. His interests span cervical, breast and oral cancer screening, HPV testing and self-sampling, and community trials.
