Pioneer of cancer genome sequencing and mutational signatures; led the Cancer Genome Project and formerly directed the Sanger Institute.
Michael Stratton is a senior group leader at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and served as its Director from 2010 until 2023. He led the Cancer Genome Project and was a founder of the International Cancer Genome Consortium, and his group established the concept of mutational signatures in human cancer. His work has defined much of the modern understanding of somatic mutation in cancer.
