Paediatric oncologist whose trials established transplant and 13-cis-retinoic acid for high-risk neuroblastoma.
Katherine Matthay is Professor Emerita of Pediatrics at UCSF, within the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a neuroblastoma investigator with the Children's Oncology Group (COG). A paediatric oncologist and long-time chair of COG neuroblastoma studies, she led the CCG-3891 trial establishing myeloablative therapy and 13-cis-retinoic acid in high-risk neuroblastoma and pioneered 131I-MIBG therapy for relapsed disease. Her papers report the Children's Cancer Group trial of intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy, autologous bone marrow transplantation and 13-cis-retinoic acid, and the long-term results of that randomised trial. Her work links iobenguane I-131 and radioligand therapy to paediatric neuroblastoma.
