Co-author of the Fearon-Vogelstein model of how colorectal cancer develops step by step.
Eric R. Fearon is Director of the Rogel Cancer Center and Emanuel N. Maisel Professor of Oncology at the University of Michigan. He is a molecular geneticist known as co-author of the Fearon-Vogelstein model describing how colorectal cancer develops step by step, and for cloning the DCC gene. His selected paper sets out a genetic model for colorectal tumorigenesis. He now directs the Rogel Cancer Center while continuing to study Wnt and APC signalling and tumour suppressor genes in colorectal cancer.

Every screening programme rests on this paper: if cancer arrives through a polyp that takes years to progress, then finding and removing polyps prevents cancer rather than merely catching it early.
