Immunologist who works out how dendritic cells detect dying tumour cells and start an anti-cancer response.
Caetano Reis e Sousa is Principal Group Leader of the Immunobiology Laboratory at The Francis Crick Institute in London. His specialisms are innate immunity, dendritic cells and cross-presentation. He studies the receptors dendritic cells use to sense dead cells and viruses, including DNGR-1 and other C-type lectins, and how those signals let dendritic cells prime T cells. His Current Opinion in Immunology paper reviewed how myeloid C-type lectin receptors sense cell death. This work explains how the immune system detects dying tumour cells and underpins cancer vaccination and immunotherapy. His publications are listed on PubMed.
