Spanish company that turns marine natural products into cancer drugs, including lurbinectedin and trabectedin.
PharmaMar, based in Madrid and listed as PHM.MC, is the Spanish company that turns marine natural products into cancer drugs, including lurbinectedin and trabectedin. It discovered lurbinectedin, sold as Zepzelca and partnered with Jazz in the United States, and trabectedin, sold as Yondelis, and the success of the IMforte trial in 2025 broadened lurbinectedin from relapsed small-cell lung cancer into first-line maintenance. OnCo links it to small-cell lung cancer, Ewing sarcoma and soft tissue sarcomas, and to the lurbinectedin drug record. Whether marine-derived transcription inhibitors can find further indications, or whether lurbinectedin remains its last major product, is the open question. Lurbinectedin has its own page.
A marine-derived chemotherapy that jams cancer's gene-reading machinery, approved for relapsed small-cell lung cancer and, since 2025, as first-line maintenance with atezolizumab.
Plitidepsin is a chemotherapy derived from a Mediterranean sea squirt, approved in Australia in 2018 with dexamethasone for multiple myeloma after several other treatments; the European regulator refused it, and it drew attention in 2021 as a possible COVID-19 antiviral.
