MIT spin-out whose Lumisight dye and imaging system show leftover breast cancer in the lumpectomy cavity before the operation ends.
Lumicell, based in Newton, Massachusetts, and founded in 2008, is the MIT spin-out whose Lumisight dye and imaging system show leftover breast cancer in the lumpectomy cavity before the operation ends. Its pegulicianine, sold as Lumisight, and the Lumicell Direct Visualization System were approved by the FDA in April 2024 after the INSITE trial, making the combination the first optical imaging agent approved for breast cancer surgery. OnCo links it to HR-positive, triple-negative and HER2-positive breast cancer, fluorescence-guided surgery and optical imaging, and to the pegulicianine record. Whether intraoperative imaging reduces re-operations enough to justify its cost and time is the open question. Pegulicianine has its own page.
A cavity-imaging dye used during breast lumpectomy to spot leftover tumour before the operation ends, reducing second surgeries.
