Thomas Lynch is a lung cancer oncologist who co-discovered EGFR mutations and now leads Fred Hutch.
Thomas Lynch Jr. is President and Director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, a role he has held since 2020, having previously led Yale Cancer Center and Massachusetts General Hospital's cancer centre. A thoracic oncologist specialising in lung cancer and targeted therapy, his 2004 New England Journal of Medicine paper identified EGFR mutations as the reason some lung cancers respond to gefitinib. His papers include that report of activating mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor underlying responsiveness of non-small-cell lung cancer to gefitinib and the BMS099 phase III trial of cetuximab with first-line taxane and carboplatin chemotherapy in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. His work links EGFR and small-molecule kinase inhibitors to cancer centre leadership.
