Piaoyang Sun turned a small Lianyungang generics factory into Hengrui, China's largest originator drug company and the source of camrelizumab, apatinib and a dozen other approved cancer drugs.
Piaoyang Sun is Chairman of Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals. He took over Hengrui in 1990 and turned a small Lianyungang generics factory into China's largest originator drug company, the source of camrelizumab, apatinib (rivoceranib), pyrotinib and a dozen other approved cancer drugs. Having reinvested heavily in research from the 2000s, he returned as chairman in 2021 to steer the company through China's generics price cuts toward innovative drugs, international licensing deals with Merck KGaA, IDEAYA and GSK, and the 2025 Hong Kong listing. His approach is pharmaceutical leadership built on a long-term research and development strategy.
