Built one of the first CD19 CAR-T programmes and invented 'armoured' CAR-T cells that secrete cytokines.
Renier J. Brentjens is Deputy Director, Chair of the Department of Medicine and the Katherine Anne Gioia Endowed Chair in Cancer Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. He built one of the first CD19 CAR-T programmes, developing the 19-28z CAR at Memorial Sloan Kettering and leading its first leukaemia trials, and invented armoured CAR-T cells that secrete cytokines. His selected paper reports CD19-targeted T cells rapidly inducing molecular remissions in adults with chemotherapy-refractory acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Since moving to Roswell Park in 2021 he has developed IL-18 and IL-12 armoured CARs for solid tumours.
