A surgeon and public-health campaigner whose work links oral cancer to tobacco and drives prevention policy in India.
Pankaj Chaturvedi is a head and neck surgical oncologist and Director of the Centre for Cancer Epidemiology at the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai. He combines surgery with epidemiology and public-health advocacy, and his work linking oral cancer to tobacco and areca nut drives prevention policy in India. His publications include a prospective study of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and sentinel node biopsy in staging early oral cancer, an analysis of optimum surgical margins in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue, and a study of lymphatic metastasis in relation to the submandibular gland in oral cavity cancer. His interests are head and neck surgery, tobacco control, cancer prevention and epidemiology. He is Director of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), the research and development wing of Tata Memorial Centre in Navi Mumbai, and a leading advocate for tobacco regulation and cancer prevention policy in India.
