Oncologist who was lead author of ABC-06, the first randomised trial to show that second-line chemotherapy helps people with advanced bile duct cancer.
Angela Lamarca trained and worked at The Christie in Manchester before moving to Madrid. She was first author of the 2021 Lancet Oncology report of ABC-06, the UK trial that showed FOLFOX plus active symptom control lengthened survival compared with symptom control alone after gemcitabine and cisplatin in advanced biliary tract cancer, establishing a second-line standard. She also works on neuroendocrine tumours.
FOLFOX became the guideline second-line option for gallbladder cancer on this trial. The gain is real but small, which is why later-line care now starts with a search for a HER2 or other targetable alteration.
The prevalence estimate that made HER2 the first gallbladder-relevant target; it argues for testing every advanced gallbladder cancer, since one in five may qualify for zanidatamab or trastuzumab deruxtecan.
