Norway's national cancer hospital and research institute, where the alpha emitter radium-223 (Xofigo) and Photocure's bladder imaging agent were born.
The Norwegian Radium Hospital opened in 1932 as Norway's specialist cancer hospital and became part of Oslo University Hospital in 2009; its Institute for Cancer Research dates from 1954 and is a European reference for cancer genomics, immunology and radiation biology. Roy Larsen and Øyvind Bruland developed radium-223 there and founded Algeta, whose Xofigo became the first approved targeted alpha therapy after Bayer's acquisition, and the hospital also spun out Photocure and Ultimovacs. Current groups include Johanna Olweus on T-cell receptor therapies, Ragnhild Lothe on colorectal genomics, Ola Myklebost on sarcoma and Åslaug Helland, who leads the national IMPRESS-Norway precision medicine trial. The campus is being rebuilt with a new clinic and Norway's first proton therapy centre, and it anchors the Oslo Cancer Cluster innovation park.
