SBI Pharmaceuticals is the Tokyo company behind 5-aminolevulinic acid products in Japan, including Alaglio, which makes bladder tumours glow during cystoscopy so surgeons can see and remove them.
SBI Pharmaceuticals, part of Japan's SBI group and founded in 2011, develops medicines and supplements based on 5-aminolevulinic acid. Its Alaglio was approved in Japan for photodynamic diagnosis of bladder cancer during transurethral resection and for glioma surgery, and its Canadian arm SBI ALApharma Canada ran phase 3 trials to bring the bladder cancer indication to North America, registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.
Aminolevulinic acid is painted on sun-damaged skin and then activated with a lamp, destroying actinic keratoses before they can become skin cancer; in Europe the gel is also approved for superficial basal cell carcinoma.
