Biofrontera, based in Leverkusen, is a German dermatology company whose photodynamic therapy product Ameluz, an aminolevulinic acid gel used with its RhodoLED lamp, treats actinic keratosis and, in Europe, superficial basal cell carcinoma. Biofrontera AG developed Ameluz as a nanoemulsion gel approved in the European Union in 2011 and the United States in 2016 for actinic keratosis with red-light photodynamic therapy, the EU label also covers basal cell carcinoma, and Biofrontera Inc. in Woburn, Massachusetts, commercialises it in the United States. OnCo links it to the topical aminolevulinic acid drug record. Whether photodynamic therapy earns a US basal cell carcinoma indication to match Europe is the open question. Aminolevulinic acid has its own page.
Aminolevulinic acid is painted on sun-damaged skin and then activated with a lamp, destroying actinic keratoses before they can become skin cancer; in Europe the gel is also approved for superficial basal cell carcinoma.
