Pioneer of stereotactic body radiotherapy, whose RTOG 0236 trial made SBRT the standard for inoperable early lung cancer.
Robert Timmerman led the Indiana and RTOG 0236 trials that established stereotactic body radiotherapy as a curative option for medically inoperable stage I lung cancer, with local control above 90%. He defined the toxicity limits for central tumours and leads NRG trials of SBRT in operable patients and oligometastatic disease. His work made ablative radiotherapy a mainstream modality.
