Lung cancer doctor who was the lead author of CheckMate 227, the trial that showed the immunotherapy pair nivolumab and ipilimumab helps people with advanced lung cancer live longer than chemotherapy alone.
Matthew Hellmann was first author of the CheckMate 227 reports in the New England Journal of Medicine, including the 2019 overall-survival analysis of nivolumab plus ipilimumab in previously untreated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. His research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he practised as a thoracic oncologist, centred on tumour mutational burden and other predictors of response to immune checkpoint blockade.

| Rizvi 2015: the mutational landscape determines who responds to PD-1 blockade in lung cancer | Science | 2015 |
It is the strongest case that mutation burden is real biology in lung cancer and, at the same time, the clearest demonstration that its threshold is not fixed, which is why it never became a reliable selector.
It made tumour mutational burden measurable in routine practice and, in the same stroke, showed it is a second axis alongside PD-L1 rather than a replacement for it.
