Computational biologist who directs EMBL-EBI, home of the open genomic and cancer data resources used worldwide.
Ewan Birney is Director of EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) near Cambridge, UK. He is a computational biologist who played leading roles in the ENCODE project and the Ensembl genome browser, and has co-led the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health. EMBL-EBI hosts open resources, including the European Genome-phenome Archive and Open Targets, that underpin cancer genomics research.
