Italian oncologist who led TAM-01, the trial that showed a low dose of tamoxifen halves recurrence after non-invasive breast cancer with fewer side effects than the standard dose.
Andrea DeCensi is a medical oncologist at Galliera Hospital in Genoa who has spent his career on breast cancer prevention. He was first author of the 2019 Journal of Clinical Oncology report of TAM-01, an Italian trial in which tamoxifen at 5 mg a day for three years reduced recurrence and new breast cancers after ductal carcinoma in situ and other non-invasive lesions, with a toxicity profile little different from placebo. Low-dose tamoxifen is now an option in guidelines for risk reduction.
