Sumitomo Pharma makes Orgovyx (relugolix), the first oral GnRH antagonist for prostate cancer.
Sumitomo Pharma, based in Osaka, is the Japanese pharmaceutical company that makes Orgovyx, or relugolix, the first oral GnRH antagonist for prostate cancer, after acquiring Myovant Sciences in 2023. In the HERO trial relugolix gave rapid and reversible testosterone suppression without the flare seen with GnRH agonists, and with fewer major cardiovascular events in that trial. OnCo links it to prostate cancer and to the relugolix drug record. Whether an oral daily tablet improves adherence and outcomes over long-acting injections in routine practice, rather than in a trial, is the open question. Relugolix has its own page with the approval detail.
Relugolix is the first hormone-suppressing pill for prostate cancer, working within days and wearing off quickly when stopped.
Amrubicin is a Japanese anthracycline approved there in 2002 for small cell and non-small cell lung cancer, a standard second-line option for small cell lung cancer in Japan that failed to beat topotecan in a Western phase 3 trial and now serves as the comparator in global trials.
Napabucasin, an oral drug marketed as a cancer stemness inhibitor, was tested in 1,134 people with untreated metastatic pancreatic cancer on top of nab-paclitaxel and gemcitabine; survival was identical and the trial was stopped for futility.
