Shionogi is a long-established Osaka pharmaceutical company, best known for antibiotics and antivirals, that developed the platinum chemotherapy nedaplatin sold in Japan as Aqupla.
Shionogi, founded in Osaka in 1878, is a research-based pharmaceutical company with strengths in infectious disease, including the antiviral Xofluza and the antibiotic cefiderocol, and in pain and central nervous system medicines. In oncology it developed nedaplatin (254-S), a second-generation platinum agent with less kidney toxicity than cisplatin, approved in Japan in 1995 as Aqupla for head and neck, lung, oesophageal, bladder, cervical, ovarian and testicular cancers.
Nedaplatin is a Japanese platinum drug, approved there in 1995, used for head and neck, oesophageal, lung, cervical and other squamous cancers as a gentler alternative to cisplatin on the kidneys; it has never been approved in the West.
