Panbela Therapeutics is a Minnesota biotech whose drug ivospemin starves pancreatic cancer of polyamines, molecules the tumour needs to grow, and is being tested with gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel in first-line treatment.
Panbela Therapeutics, formerly Sun BioPharma, develops polyamine-targeting therapies. Ivospemin (SBP-101) is a polyamine analogue that is taken up preferentially by pancreatic acinar and cancer cells and disrupts polyamine metabolism. The phase 2/3 ASPIRE trial tested ivospemin with gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel in first-line metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Through its acquisition of Cancer Prevention Pharmaceuticals it also holds eflornithine-based programmes for familial adenomatous polyposis.
Ivospemin is an experimental small-molecule drug from Panbela Therapeutics in phase 3 trials for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, with its target not yet stated publicly.
