Nivolumab-ipilimumab or chemo-IO; TTFields.
Nivolumab was the second PD-1 blocker and is often combined with ipilimumab. Long-term data show about half of advanced melanoma patients alive at 10 years on the combination.
Ipilimumab was the first checkpoint inhibitor (2011), and proved the immune system could be unleashed against cancer.
Pembrolizumab is a PD-1 blocking antibody approved in more than 40 settings, from melanoma and lung cancer to the first tumour-agnostic approval for mismatch-repair-deficient tumours in 2017, and before and after surgery in triple-negative breast cancer. A subcutaneous form arrived in 2025, and it is the backbone partner for ADCs and personalised neoantigen vaccines.
Optune is a wearable device delivering electric fields that disrupt cell division. It is approved for glioblastoma and, in 2026, pancreatic cancer.

CT and PET/CT; thoracoscopic biopsy with IHC panel (calretinin, WT1, D2-40; BAP1 and MTAP loss support malignancy); histology and BAP1/MTAP status recorded for treatment planning.
Histopathology means looking at cancer cells under a microscope, and immunohistochemistry stains them for specific proteins. Together they are still the foundation of every diagnosis.
PET and CT in one machine, so hot spots on the PET are pinned to exact locations on the CT.
A CT scan is a fast 3D X-ray that shows the size and shape of tumours and whether they have spread.

Averages across everyone diagnosed, often years ago. A median is the middle of a group: half the people counted lived longer than the figure shown, and some lived far longer. Your stage, subtype, age, fitness and the treatment you receive matter more than the average, and the numbers are improving quickly.

Not recommended for cure outside trials after MARS 2; VATS pleurodesis or indwelling pleural catheter for effusion; extended pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) only in clinical trials.
Pleurectomy and decortication are operations that strip the tumour-bearing lining from the lung and chest wall. They were long assumed to help; the MARS 2 trial showed they do not.
OS HR 1.28 favouring no surgery; median 19.3 vs 24.8 months.

Palliative for chest wall pain; prophylactic tract irradiation not beneficial (SMART/PIT trials); hemithoracic IMRT after surgery only in trials.
IMRT and IGRT shape the radiation beam to the tumour's outline from multiple angles and check the patient's position with a scan before every session, so surrounding organs receive less dose. Fewer, larger doses are now standard in breast and prostate cancer, but a low-dose bath still spreads across normal tissue.
