{"entity":{"id":"luminate-medical","kind":"company","name":"Luminate Medical","aka":[],"tldr":"Luminate makes a wearable device that presses gently on the scalp during chemotherapy to stop the drug reaching the hair follicles, so patients keep their hair. It is in trials and no regulator has cleared it.","summary":"Luminate Medical, founded in Galway, developed Lily, a wearable cap that applies controlled compression to the scalp during chemotherapy infusion to restrict blood flow to hair follicles and prevent chemotherapy-induced hair loss, an alternative to cold-cap scalp cooling that needs no refrigeration. Its sister device Lilac applies low pressure to the hands and feet with the same intent for chemotherapy nerve damage.\n\nWhat can be verified independently is the registry, not the claim. The Lily trial, PREVAIL (NCT06786078), is a single-group open-label safety and efficacy study of 85 patients at four US sites, started December 2024, with hair preservation at four cycles graded by an independent clinician as its primary question; participants wear the device during the infusion and for two to four hours afterwards. Its registry record is still marked recruiting but was last updated in January 2025, past its own estimated completion, and no result has been published. The Lilac trial (NCT07142304) started in October 2025 with 142 participants and a sham arm.\n\nThe device is not cleared. Luminate appears nowhere among the devices the US Food and Drug Administration has authorised under the scalp cooling product code, and the company’s own website states that the information on it pertains to pre-clinical or clinical-stage medical devices in development that have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. That site is now largely about Lotus, a nurse-led home chemotherapy infusion service, rather than about the devices.","asOf":"2026-09-10","links":[{"label":"Y Combinator profile","url":"https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/luminate-medical"},{"label":"Official website","url":"https://www.luminatemed.com"}],"tags":["yc"],"related":[],"cancers":[],"sections":["rejuvenation","supportive-care","devices"],"technologies":["scalp-cooling"],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":[],"trials":[],"people":[],"bottlenecks":[],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"hq":"Galway","country":"IE","companyType":"devices","website":"https://www.luminatemed.com","stage":"startup","ycBatch":"S21","investors":["y-combinator"],"funding":[]},"route":"/companies/luminate-medical/","neighbours":{"section":[{"id":"devices","kind":"section","name":"Devices & Physical Therapies","route":"/fronts/devices/"},{"id":"rejuvenation","kind":"section","name":"Recovery & Rejuvenation","route":"/fronts/rejuvenation/"},{"id":"supportive-care","kind":"section","name":"Supportive Care & Survivorship","route":"/fronts/supportive-care/"}],"technology":[{"id":"scalp-cooling","kind":"technology","name":"Scalp cooling (cold caps: DigniCap, Paxman)","route":"/technologies/scalp-cooling/"}],"company":[{"id":"y-combinator","kind":"company","name":"Y Combinator","route":"/companies/y-combinator/"}],"roadmap":[{"id":"devices-roadmap","kind":"roadmap","name":"Devices and physical therapies roadmap: heat and light → electric fields and focused sound → drug-releasing implants","route":"/roadmaps/devices-roadmap/"}]}}
