Its 2020 report drew on 28 population-based and 58 hospital-based registries covering 2012-2016 (667,666 cases) and projected 1,392,179 new cancers for 2020, with breast, lung, mouth, cervix and tongue the five leading sites; a 2022 update estimated 1,461,427 cases (crude rate 100.4 per 100,000) and a 12.8% rise by 2025, and put lifetime risk at about one in nine.\n\nThe registries also show where India is different: most breast (57%), cervical (60%) and head and neck (66.6%) cancers present at a locally advanced stage, the north-east has the highest incidence rates in the country, and tobacco-related cancers dominate in men.
