It randomised 407 patients to secondary cytoreductive surgery plus chemotherapy or chemotherapy alone, met its primary overall survival endpoint, and the benefit was concentrated in patients whose tumour was completely resected. OnCo links it to ovarian cancer, minimally invasive surgery and Andreas du Bois; it contradicted the negative surgery arm of GOG-0213, with patient selection the likely explanation, while the Chinese SOC-1 trial showed a progression benefit. Whether the AGO score can be reproduced outside expert centres is the open question.","status":"positive","asOf":"2026-09-07","links":[{"label":"ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01166737","url":"https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT01166737"},{"label":"NEJM 2021","url":"https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2103294"}],"tags":[],"related":[],"cancers":["ovarian","high-grade-serous-ovarian-cancer","platinum-sensitive-ovarian-cancer"],"sections":[],"technologies":["robotic-surgery"],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":["ago-study-group"],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":[],"trials":[],"people":["andreas-du-bois"],"bottlenecks":[],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"nct":"NCT01166737","phase":"3","setting":"First platinum-sensitive relapse with a positive AGO score: secondary cytoreductive surgery + chemotherapy vs chemotherapy alone","sponsor":"AGO","result":"OS 53.7 vs 46.0 months (HR 0.75).","started":"2010-07","startedType":"actual","yearReported":2020,"enrolled":408,"enrolledBasis":"registry","outcomes":[{"endpoint":"Overall survival","primary":true,"unit":"months","arms":[{"name":"Surgery + chemotherapy","n":206,"value":53.7},{"name":"Chemotherapy alone","n":201,"value":46}],"hr":0.75,"ci":[0.59,0.96],"source":"https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2103294"}],"replication":"GOG-0213 found no benefit without selection criteria; SOC-1 (China) showed a PFS benefit."},"route":"/trials/desktop-iii/","neighbours":{"cancer":[{"id":"high-grade-serous-ovarian-cancer","kind":"cancer","name":"High-grade serous ovarian cancer","route":"/cancers/high-grade-serous-ovarian-cancer/"},{"id":"ovarian","kind":"cancer","name":"Ovarian cancer","route":"/cancers/ovarian/"},{"id":"platinum-sensitive-ovarian-cancer","kind":"cancer","name":"Platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer","route":"/cancers/platinum-sensitive-ovarian-cancer/"}],"technology":[{"id":"robotic-surgery","kind":"technology","name":"Robotic & minimally invasive surgery","route":"/technologies/robotic-surgery/"}],"company":[{"id":"ago-study-group","kind":"company","name":"AGO Study Group","route":"/companies/ago-study-group/"}],"person":[{"id":"andreas-du-bois","kind":"person","name":"Andreas du Bois","route":"/people/andreas-du-bois/"}],"paper":[{"id":"paper-desktop-iii-nejm-2021","kind":"paper","name":"DESKTOP III: secondary cytoreductive surgery for recurrent platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer","route":"/key-papers/paper-desktop-iii-nejm-2021/"}]}}
