Most chemotherapy causes it temporarily; radioligands, CAR-T and some pills cause longer-lasting versions.","summary":"Myelosuppression is the shared toxicity of cytotoxic chemotherapy, conditioning regimens, lymphodepletion, radioligand therapy (177Lu-PSMA, PRRT) and a range of targeted agents, graded per lineage by CTCAE; pancytopenia means all three lineages are low. Blood counts before each cycle gate treatment, and delays and dose reductions are the standard responses. After CAR-T, prolonged and biphasic cytopenias (ICAHT) affect a third of patients and drive infection deaths months after infusion; lymphopenia is a marker of poorer immunotherapy outcomes. Therapy-related MDS is the late, permanent form of marrow injury.","asOf":"2026-09-09","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myelosuppression","links":[{"label":"Wikipedia","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myelosuppression"}],"tags":[],"related":["neutropenia","thrombocytopenia","anaemia","mds"],"cancers":[],"sections":["supportive-care"],"technologies":[],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":[],"trials":[],"people":[],"bottlenecks":[],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"category":"Side effects"},"route":"/terms/cytopenias/","neighbours":{"term":[{"id":"anaemia","kind":"term","name":"Anaemia","route":"/terms/anaemia/"},{"id":"febrile-neutropenia","kind":"term","name":"Febrile neutropenia","route":"/terms/febrile-neutropenia/"},{"id":"hypogammaglobulinaemia","kind":"term","name":"Hypogammaglobulinaemia and infection risk after B-cell therapies","route":"/terms/hypogammaglobulinaemia/"},{"id":"lymphodepletion","kind":"term","name":"Lymphodepletion before CAR-T","route":"/terms/lymphodepletion/"},{"id":"neutropenia","kind":"term","name":"Neutropenia","route":"/terms/neutropenia/"},{"id":"thrombocytopenia","kind":"term","name":"Thrombocytopenia","route":"/terms/thrombocytopenia/"}],"cancer":[{"id":"advanced-systemic-mastocytosis","kind":"cancer","name":"Advanced systemic mastocytosis (aggressive SM, SM with an associated haematological neoplasm, mast cell leukaemia)","route":"/cancers/advanced-systemic-mastocytosis/"},{"id":"cmml","kind":"cancer","name":"Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia and MDS/MPN overlap neoplasms","route":"/cancers/cmml/"},{"id":"lch-multisystem","kind":"cancer","name":"Multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis (with or without risk-organ involvement)","route":"/cancers/lch-multisystem/"},{"id":"mds","kind":"cancer","name":"Myelodysplastic syndromes / neoplasms (MDS)","route":"/cancers/mds/"},{"id":"systemic-mastocytosis","kind":"cancer","name":"Systemic mastocytosis","route":"/cancers/systemic-mastocytosis/"}],"section":[{"id":"supportive-care","kind":"section","name":"Supportive Care & Survivorship","route":"/fronts/supportive-care/"}],"technology":[{"id":"rejuv-tx-prolonged-cytopenias","kind":"technology","name":"Blood counts that do not come back after CAR-T: ICAHT","route":"/technologies/rejuv-tx-prolonged-cytopenias/"},{"id":"rejuv-tx-infection-by-phase","kind":"technology","name":"Infection risk after transplant and cell therapy, phase by phase, and the prophylaxis that follows it","route":"/technologies/rejuv-tx-infection-by-phase/"},{"id":"rejuv-tx-iron-overload","kind":"technology","name":"Iron overload after transplant","route":"/technologies/rejuv-tx-iron-overload/"},{"id":"rejuv-tx-immune-reconstitution-timeline","kind":"technology","name":"Rebuilding an immune system: the timeline, lineage by lineage","route":"/technologies/rejuv-tx-immune-reconstitution-timeline/"},{"id":"gvhd-ruxolitinib-steroid-refractory","kind":"technology","name":"When steroids fail: ruxolitinib for steroid-refractory GvHD","route":"/technologies/gvhd-ruxolitinib-steroid-refractory/"}]}}
