She initially declined further treatment, then agreed; her disease responded and did not return. Her case, told in Robert Bazell's book Her-2 and dramatised in the 2008 film Living Proof, gave the programme evidence at a moment when its future inside Genentech was uncertain. Trastuzumab was approved by the FDA in 1998 for metastatic HER2-positive disease and, after the adjuvant trials of 2005, for early disease, changing a subtype once regarded as among the worst into one of the more treatable. She remained a public voice for the trial participants whose consent made the drug possible.","asOf":"2026-09-09","links":[{"label":"Living Proof (2008 film)","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Proof_(2008_film)"},{"label":"Dennis Slamon (Wikipedia)","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Slamon"}],"tags":["hero","patient"],"related":[],"cancers":["breast-her2-positive"],"sections":[],"technologies":["monoclonal-antibody"],"targets":["her2"],"drugs":["trastuzumab"],"companies":[],"institutions":["ucla-jonsson"],"pathways":[],"terms":[],"trials":["hera-b31-n9831"],"people":["dennis-slamon"],"bottlenecks":["b-trial-enrolment","b-translational-valley"],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"role":"First long-term survivor of the trastuzumab trials","specialisms":["HER2-positive breast cancer","Clinical trial participation"],"profiles":[{"label":"Living Proof (2008 film)","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Proof_(2008_film)"},{"label":"Dennis Slamon (Wikipedia)","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Slamon"}],"papers":[]},"route":"/people/barbara-bradfield/","neighbours":{"cancer":[{"id":"breast-her2-positive","kind":"cancer","name":"HER2-positive breast cancer","route":"/cancers/breast-her2-positive/"}],"technology":[{"id":"monoclonal-antibody","kind":"technology","name":"Monoclonal antibodies","route":"/technologies/monoclonal-antibody/"}],"target":[{"id":"her2","kind":"target","name":"HER2","route":"/targets/her2/"}],"drug":[{"id":"trastuzumab","kind":"drug","name":"Trastuzumab","route":"/drugs/trastuzumab/"}],"institution":[{"id":"ucla-jonsson","kind":"institution","name":"UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center","route":"/institutions/ucla-jonsson/"}],"trial":[{"id":"hera-b31-n9831","kind":"trial","name":"HERA, NSABP B-31 & NCCTG N9831 (adjuvant trastuzumab)","route":"/trials/hera-b31-n9831/"}],"person":[{"id":"dennis-slamon","kind":"person","name":"Dennis J.
