## TL;DR

The standards body behind FHIR, the healthcare data interface now used to pull oncology records into trials, registries and AI tools, and home of the mCODE cancer data standard.

## Summary

Founded in 1987, Health Level Seven International develops the messaging and data standards that let health IT systems exchange information, including HL7 v2, CDA and, since 2011, Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), which US regulation now requires electronic health record vendors to support. For oncology, the minimal Common Oncology Data Elements (mCODE) implementation guide developed with ASCO's CodeX accelerator defines a core set of structured cancer data (diagnosis, staging, biomarkers, treatments, outcomes) so that records can feed registries, trial matching, real-world evidence and quality measurement without manual abstraction. HL7's work groups also cover genomics reporting and patient-reported outcomes.
