## TL;DR

Funds and builds the Human Cell Atlas infrastructure and the CZI virtual cell models (TranscriptFormer), plus one of the largest nonprofit GPU clusters for biology.

## Summary

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and its Biohub, based in Redwood City, fund and build the Human Cell Atlas infrastructure, the CZI virtual cell models including TranscriptFormer and rBio, and one of the largest nonprofit GPU clusters for biology. CELLxGENE, the TranscriptFormer and rBio models released in 2025 and the Billion Cells Project underpin much single-cell foundation model work. OnCo links it to TranscriptFormer and rBio, the Universal Cell Embedding and the virtual cell roadmap. Whether philanthropic infrastructure keeps foundational cell models open as commercial ones proliferate is the question its role raises. The virtual cell roadmap has its own page.
